We let Zoe feed herself last night - in mommy terms that's referred to as Baby Led Weaning. We started feeding her some solids at 6 months, all in puréed form, because truth be told that's what I thought we had to do. Our pediatrician at the time was clueless. We just never clicked with her and I am still angry with myself for not doing more research and interviewing a few doctors beforehand. So we simply weren't aware of BLW until recently when someone on Facebook mentioned it. So we watched a few videos on YouTube about it and ended up giving Zoe her favorite food, avocado, to try it out. It was a big hit, she immediately caught on and fed herself. She doesn't have any teeth yet so we figured we'd start out with something that's easily mashable by her gums.
Guys, it was also a huge mess. I am so not a fan of messy food so at one point I had to go and sit at the opposite end of the table, out of view, and let my husband take over the supervision. I know I need to get over that real quick since it'll only get messier from here but woah. Avocado everywhere. To the dogs delight, of course.
I still have several cubes of puréed food in the freezer so I'll continue to feed those to her until their all gone but I won't be preparing anything else from this point on. I love how BLW emphasizes the "food before one is just for fun" idea. Breastmilk is still Zoe's number one source of nutrition, but it's also important to me to introduce her to a lot of nutritious foods early on so she's good to go when she's ready to stop nursing.
